چکیده

Yaws is a highly contagious and disfiguring disease very prevalent in the tropics and believed now to be caused by a specific spirochaete--the Treponerna pertenuis of Castellani. Although some writers have held that yaws and syphilis are merely two manifestations of the same disease, it can now be stated that the weight of opinion is against' that view and in favor of the view that they are distinct diseases. With this latter conclusion the experimental work of the last few years is in harmony? Monkeys can be inoculated with yaws as with syphilis; and monkeys which have recovered from syphilitic lesions are still susceptible to inoculation with yaws, although they are not reinoculable with syphilis. Moreover. Treponerna pertenuis is distinguishable morphologically f rom Treponerna pallidum; and thus while it can be affirmed that both syphilis and yaws are caused by spiroch~etal organisms, it can also be stated that the spirocha~tm belong to different species. All the evidence is, therefore, to the effect that the diseases are distinct entities. Hitherto, the treatment of yaws has been highly unsatisfactory. In the first place, the usual treatment employed must be continued over long periods of time to attain any permanent result. While this is possible in some cases among the better class of patients, it is nearly impracticable with the class of dispensary and hospital patients, and among the lower classes of natives it is wholly impracticable. There would appear to be no specific treatment for

Further Observations on Certain Features of Experimental Syphilis and Yaws in the Rabbit

1. Lesions of the testicle and scrotum of the rabbit produced by the treponema of syphilis and of yaws afford material for the study of chemotherapy, of serum reactions, and of immunity. 2. On experimental and clinical grounds, it appears that yaws can be cured with a smaller dose of salvarsan than is necessary to cure syphilis. 3. The spirochaetae of syphilis do not become resistant after repe...

Studies of Urobilin Elimination in the Normal and Anemic Dog

1. The output of urobilin is increased in experimental trypanosome anemia presumably as a result of the increased blood destruction. 2. The administration of salvarsan (arsenobenzol) during the anemic period, if it checks the blood destruction, reduces the urobilin elimination, but this result does not follow unless the blood picture improves. 3. Following splenectomy in the normal dog an incre...

The Treatment of Syphilis with Salvarsan

Among the various books dealing with Salvarsan this will naturally take a prominent place as it has received the benediction of Professor Ehrlich and may thus be regarded as being almost an official document. A large part of the book is devoted to a description of individual cases showing the great value of Salvarsan, especially in refractory cases of syphilis. The occurrence of relapses in a f...
